Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition characterized by a cycle of obsessions (unwanted, intrusive thoughts) and compulsions (repetitive behaviors or mental acts). People with OCD feel driven to perform these actions to relieve the anxiety caused by the obsessions, even though they may realize the behavior is irrational.

OCD can affect people of all ages and interfere with work, relationships, and daily activities. However, with timely intervention and treatment, OCD is manageable and treatable.

Common Obsessions Include:

  • Fear of germs, dirt, or contamination
  • Fear of harming oneself or others
  • Unwanted thoughts involving sex, religion, or aggression
  • Excessive concern with order, symmetry, or perfection
  • Doubts about locking doors, turning off appliances, etc.

Common Compulsions Include:

  • Excessive cleaning or handwashing
  • Checking things repeatedly (locks, stoves, etc.)
  • Counting, tapping, repeating words silently
  • Arranging objects in a specific order
  • Seeking constant reassurance

When to Seek Help:

  • Rituals take up an hour or more each day
  • Obsessions cause significant distress or interfere with life
  • Avoidance of situations due to fear or triggers
  • Emotional exhaustion and social withdrawal

Effective Treatment Options:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)
  • Medications such as SSRIs (under psychiatric supervision)
  • Mindfulness and relaxation techniques
  • Support groups and psychoeducation for patient and family
